Premium Games - Balancing combat and experience systems

About

Balancing game difficulty is crucial for ensuring a satisfying and immersive gaming experience. A well-balanced game keeps players engaged by offering challenges that are neither too easy nor impossibly hard, fostering a sense of achievement and progression. Difficulty plays a key role in determining how players interact with the game’s mechanics, puzzles, and combat systems. If a game is too easy, players may lose interest due to the lack of challenge, while an overly difficult game can lead to frustration and disengagement. The sweet spot lies in maintaining a balance that keeps players motivated to continue, providing them with a rewarding experience that feels fair and achievable.

The generic game models an RGP-type game in which enemies spawn in waves that act as the XP grinding mechanic and the player can decide at any time to start the boss fight.

Using the power of predictions, we can conclude that there is a significant power increase when defeating the last 10 enemy waves (40-50). Additionally, during the middle section of the XP grinding process, the waves 30-40 do not offer a relevant progression opportunity for the player. This lack of power growth might create dissatisfaction and frustration for players that do not enjoy longer XP farming sessions. In conclusion, using Machinations simulations, game designers are empowered to identify critical points in numerous game systems that can make or break an upcoming title.
