Charts allow you to plot multiple variables while running your diagrams, visualize possible outcomes, and help you monitor specific parameters stand alone or in relationship to others.

To unfold the Chart area, click the Open Chart button in the Play Bar.

Plotting Nodes

Select the Nodes (Pools or Registers) you want to plot
Tick the “Show in Chart” box in the bottom right corner of the properties panel. You may also right-click any of the selected nodes and select the option “Show in chart” from the context menu.

Removing Nodes from the chart works the same way, with the additional option of selecting the Node directly from the Nodes listed in the chart area.

Right click the Node you wish to remove
Choose the option “Remove from chart” from the context menu.

Context Menu

Open the context menu by right-clicking the Node you wish to edit, listed in the Nodes area of the chart. You may also click on the three dots (ellipsis) to open it.

From the context menu, you are able to:

Change the colour used in the Chart for plotting (it defaults to the Node’s colour, set in the Style section of the Properties panel of each Node). Note that the default is the colour of the Node itself, not the colour of the Resources it processes. A Pool, for example, may contain Resources of different colours.
Choose the plotting method:
You can choose the plotting method individually for each node, from their contextual menus.
1. The default plotting method is Line Chart
2. There is the additional option Area Chart
Make the Node Visible or hide it from the Chart
Highlight the Node within the Chart for focus
Choose the scale (left or right) – this is particularly useful when the data series you are plotting have different magnitudes ( =number range). E.g.: the number of coins (large range of numbers) plotted against each level (smaller range of numbers).

On the y-axis Machinations plots the values of the selected Pools and Registers.

The x-axis represents the number of Steps executed.

Indicators: Mean, Median, Min & Max

To aid with your analysis, Machinations calculates the Mean, Median, Min & Max Values as averages across multiple executions.

Select any Node in the Legend bar next to the Chart.
Click on + Add Indicator located under the node name.
Select the indicators you want to plot in the chart.

How are averages calculated?

In the example above:

The Mean: represents the Mean of the plotted Node’s values at a certain Step, across all numbers of Plays executed. For the “Coin Points” Pool example, 4340 is the Mean of all values the Pool reached at Step 39, across 10 executions.
1. Mean calculation: the sum of all values, divided by the number of values. E.g.: The mean of a, b, c is (a+b+c)/3.
The Median: represents the median value of all values of the plotted Node, at a certain Step. For the “Coin Points” Pool example, 4200 is the median of the values the Pool has gone through at each Step 39, across the 10 Plays.
1. The Median is the value separating the higher half from the lower half of the data set. It may be thought of as “the middle” value.
2. In your analysis, use the median in comparison to the mean, to check if your data set is not skewed by a small proportion of extremely large or small values. This comparison will provide a better representation of a “typical” value.
Min/Max Values: The minimum/maximum values in the data set of the analyzed Node, at the same Step of multiple executions. In the example above: the Min and Max values represent the minimum and maximum values generated by the Pool at Step 39 of each of the 10 executions.

Pro tip – To only show the Indicators of an execution, deselect “Visible” on all plotted variables, or select “Highlighted” for the plot you want to focus on.

Use the Clear Chart button to clear the Chart’s content and deselect the plotted executions from “Run History”.

Distribution Filter

The Distribution filter displays the number of occurrences of values within a specific range during the execution. You can click on any of the distribution bars to filter the chart for this particular value range.

Distribution filters for each Node can be collapsed/expanded by clicking on the arrow next to the Node’s name.

Click on the bar of the distribution range you would like to take a closer look at.
You may reset the filter, using the “Reset Filter button at the top of the chart to reset the filter and display all values again.

Zoom

You can zoom in on a specific range of steps of your chart by using the round handles at the bottom of the chart.

Once you have limited the range you want to look at, click and drag the blue bar (your range) at the bottom to move it around.

You can also look at a single step by using the “Nodes at step” button above the chart.

The button “Reset zoom” will do exactly that: reset the zoom and display all values from the selected Prediction.

Change graph visibility

Each plotted Node and its respective values represented as graph on the chart is visible by default. You can make graphs invisible, by unticking the option “Visible” from the context menu.

Click the ellipsis (3 dots) or right-click the Node you wish to hide from the Node. This will open the contextual menu for this Node.
Untick the option “Visible”. This will hide the individual Predictions for this Node.

Important: All selected indicators for this Node will still be visible.

If a Node does not have any Indicators selected, all graphs for the selected Node will be hidden.

Organize your Interactive Plays & Predictions

Predictions are a set of executions of your diagram. Each performed Prediction is listed in chronological order, nested under timestamped drop-downs.

The timestamp displayed on the drop-down is that of the diagram version, not that of the execution, allowing you to identify batch executions for the same diagram version.

Select or deselect the executions you want to display on the chart. You may also select multiple executions. All values will be aggregated and calculated accordingly across the selected items.

To clear the chart, use the “Clear Chart” button at the top.

Multiple Charts

Initiating a new Prediction or accessing a previously executed Prediction from the History panel while a chart is already active enables the display of an additional chart.
Upon selecting or running a third chart, you’ll receive a prompt to replace either Chart A or Chart B.

Fullscreen Mode

Activate Fullscreen Mode in the chart panel via the dedicated button located at the top right corner of the chart. This functionality enhances your ability to view and compare multiple concurrently displayed charts comprehensively.

Play History

Each Prediction you execute will be listed in the Play History. If you perform both Predictions and Interactive Plays during a session, the Interactive Plays will be all nested under a drop-down labeled “Interactive Play”.

Use the Filter button in the top-right corner to hide or display “My Play History”, “Team Play History”, and “Interactive Plays”. By default, all will be enabled.

Interactive Plays are NOT saved from one session to the next.

If you are on one of our paid accounts, the Play History for shared diagrams is available for all people (on a paid plan) with whom you shared the diagram.

Options Menu for Predictions

Hovering over the drop-down reveals a 3-dot menu. Click on the three dots to open the options menu for this Prediction. You can also simply right-click it.

From here, you can:

Rename the Prediction.
Load diagram – loads the diagram version on which this batch was executed. This is useful if you have made changes to the diagram between Predictions, and want to revert to a certain version associated with the batch of Predictions.
Delete the selected Prediction.

From here, you can:

Show in Chart
Highlighted – the execution will be highlighted on the chart and the values of the highlighted execution will be displayed on the chart’s legend next to a node’s name.
Replay Execution – feature coming soon
Load diagram – load the diagram version that contains the parameters on which this execution was run
Delete execution

Exports

Currently, there are 2 options for exporting the simulation results:

CSV [Pro Feature] – a table with the values of your simulations, broken down by Plays, Steps, and Nodes.
PNG – a snapshot of the Chart
