Improvements

Machinations now supports Enterprise SSO authentication using custom SAML. This is a custom feature and can be enabled on demand. You can find out more in the SSO – SAML authentication setup article.
You can now set up Custom Variables to ingest data from Private Google Sheets. Please read the Google Sheets (public or private) documentation article to learn more.
The Properties Panel is now collapsable. Use the arrows in the top-left corner of the panel to collapse or expand it.

Improvements

The sensitivity of mouse movement when clicking a component has been decreased, avoiding accidentally moving components when selecting them.
The component count of an invited user is only added to the team component limit after the user accepts the invite.
The responsiveness of the orthogonal style connections has been improved.
State connections with the “Trigger on” property have been adjusted as follows:
- The “Any value” option is now the default for the “Trigger on” property.
- On the “receiving resource” option, an Automatic Source or an Automatic Pushing Pool node will NOT trigger the state connection.
- The trigger is not activated if the resource transfer is blocked (e.g., exceeding pool capacity).

Bug Fixes

Changes for Custom Variables:
- Leaving the Sheet name field for a Public Google Sheet variable empty will now select the default Sheet1 in the Google Sheet.
- Saving a valid custom variable will no longer trigger the “could not save variable” error.
- The value for variables containing an array will no longer be displayed as NaN during execution.
Changes for properties panel:
- The Undo action is now adequately applied to modifications made in the Properties panel (eg: Stroke size, Display count).

- Multiple selected nodes will now properly align to the grid.

- We fixed a bug where using the option duplicate with connections on a group would not duplicate the external connections of the group.
Improved experience working with connections:
- Moving waypoints in the Firefox browser is working now.
- Connecting a node to the blue anchor highlighted on the origin of a state connection.
- The overwrite (“=”) state connection now properly transfers resources from a node influenced by a “+1” state connection.
- Connection pointers are no longer moved when moving/clicking on the connection’s label.
- We fixed a bug where attempting to move the label/formula overlapping a connection’s waypoint would cause it to move incorrectly.

App: We fixed multiple bugs that occurred when exporting a diagram to Google Drive:
- Diagram properties (Owner, creation/last change dates, diagram URL): the fields were incorrectly set for tutorial/template diagrams or community diagrams when they were exported to Google Drive. Now the owner and the dates reflect the values displayed in the app.
- The Z order of components on the canvas: The position (bring to front/send to back) of the components in the canvas was not saved after an import. As such, the order of the overlapped components was not consistent.
- The destination folder from Google Drive: Users were unable to save the exported diagram to a Drive folder and the diagram was placed by the default in the parent directory. Now users can view and select all available folders created in their Google Drive.
- We also fixed a bug where a shared diagram could be viewed and edited in Google Drive by a co-editor.
- The action columns for some components were missing in the GoogleSheet when exporting a diagram to Google Drive. The column has been added and will now reflect the action for the component.
App UI: The diagram counter in the Open menu will now update properly after deleting a diagram shared within the team.

Custom Variables:

We have listened to your feedback and redesigned the Custom Variable interface. A dedicated dialogue will now open for each custom variable type.

Math Expressions now provide more space to write complex formulas. The font size was also slightly increased for better readability.
Tooltips were added with more details and links to the documentation.
Each Custom Variable is now listed with its name and an icon representing the type of variable. A tooltip was added displaying the number of diagrams where the Custom Variable is used, along with a link to the filtered list of these diagrams.
When adding a Custom Variable referencing a Public Google Sheet the list of selected rows and columns is now displayed in the setup dialogue.

App: You can now reopen the last used template or diagram.
App: It is no longer possible to duplicate a custom variable. However, they are case sensitive. This means that “Myvariable” and “myvariable” are two different variables.
App: It is now possible to create arrays from global custom variables inside a register.
App: Registers did not automatically update every step. To fix this we have introduced a new property for registers to force it to update its value every step.
App: We fixed an issue where exporting a large diagram to Google Drive would fail.
App UI: A bug that prevented macOS users from selecting multiple connections has now been fixed.

App UI: We optimized the width of the dropdown field in the share dialog. When you open the share dialog, the autocomplete dropdown menu doesn’t pop up anymore unless you write something in the input box.

bugfix: A register without a defined value would not update automatically when one of its input state connections was activated. This has now been fixed, and registers will update to the correct value if one of their input State Connections is activated.

New Features

Chart history – you can now compare Run iteration outcomes on the same Chart. Use the << >> to navigate through your executions, ie: Run diagram and plot the values of a Pool, then Stop, change a parameter and Run again to notice the differences. The same for Quick Run executions. NOTE that for now you should keep your Time Steps Limit ideally lower than 100 for best performance. While you will get results in the range of hundreds, you will notice slow responsiveness. While still to be improved, this feature is one big step forward towards Multiple Runs (Monte Carlo)
Reopen last edited diagram – straightforward and useful
Live Support widget in the bottom right that you can use straight from the app.

Improvements

File Handling: complex diagrams would previously cause a “Drawing is too large” error and freeze. We’ve improved our client-server communication and this shouldn’t happen anymore, regardless of diagram size. If you do manage to freeze it, please let us know how many elements and connections on it, or send us a screenshot
Quick Run: now runs more responsive, also fixed some situations where Quick Run would result in a halt at “0” steps @João Castro. There’s still a performance issue when running Quick Run with the Chart open. Working on it. As a quick fix, we’ve downgraded the default Quick Run Steps limit to 100 (previously 1000). This will not be updated on old diagrams, so if you run into performance freeze, please downscale the number of Quick Run Steps you’re simulating. NOTE: it’s best practice to have a diagram End Condition when using Quick Run, to avoid infinite loops on the server, thanks!
Chart: overall chart animation running more smoothly

New Features

AutoSave – exactly what you would expect, working diagrams get auto saved every 10s or 10 actions. This is a big step towards Machinations becoming a full-feature webapp, with Version History, Live Collaboration, etc. Right now, it solves the great risk of losing unsaved work, which is a critical priority for us.
Multi-Waypoint Connector Drawing – Resource and State Connections can now be placed with multiple inflexions, by point and click. This is a legacy feature from Machinations desktop, that some of our users requested and we felt it would do a better job at connecting nodes on a crowded diagram.
Menu shortcut: File -> New From Template. More templates to be added today.

Framework Differences

The major differences between the old desktop and the new .io version

No more Connection length as time variable: Resources are transferred and arrive at their destination Node during the same Step, regardless of Connection length. E.g.: if previously the speed of the Resources would stay fixed and the arrival time would vary, now the speed varies and the transfer time is fixed (all Resources arrive at their destination in exactly 1 Step).
No Async Mode
No Turn-Based Mode
No Artificial Player (AP) – you can emulate AP functions with existing components
Registers now support the entire math.js functions library.
Combining flow rates: use 50%+50% instead of the old 2*50% label.
Number interval Label x-y has become x..y

Charts plot the Pool colour, instead of the Resource’s colour.
